For a no-nonsense font style, you can’t really beat an uncomplicated, condensed Gothic sans-serif, it’s about as honest and direct as they come — in my opinion.
They’re still popular today, yet many of the fonts we call upon have been around for a century or more: Franklin Gothic, News Gothic, Trade Gothic, Gothic Thirteen.
As with most practical fonts, there are only so many ways you can interpret an E or an O, so the character of the font depends on a select band of characters. The lower case a has a lot to say for itself, along with the g. I’ve stuck with the traditional two storey variety of both, common in Gothic fonts, with single storey variants for the italics.
